Will J. Reid Scout Park

Since at least 1958, the 11-acre Will J. Reid Scout Camp (located in Long Beach, CA) has been a close-to-home activity base for thousands of Scouts, Scouters, and other Youth groups.

* * *

You may or may not be aware that our local camp jewel Will J. Reid is in danger of being sold off.
For good reason? Perhaps.

As are so many in this economy, the Long Beach Area Council is struggling financially. We are indeed in the midst of one of the worst recessions in generations, with an effect that is truly profound, one that can lead to a crisis of confidence in ourselves and our leaders. But other choices can be made. The best one is for all of us to bond together and work to save our 11-acres of open space; a place that we as proud Scouts can call "home"!

A Sad State

It is a sad testament when only 30% of those whom have voted against selling Will J. Reid in the online poll have and/or are willing to put their name to paper and also sign the petition against the sale.

The Executive Committee vote is only a day away and I have heared a lot of talk about how wrong it is to sell WJR, but so little effort shown to back up those words. It takes no efforts to put name to petition, but it will take a tremendous effort to hold your head up after the vote when you stood by and did nothing. I hope I am not disappointed in my trust in the Scouters of the LBAC and that there is a last minute flood of names on the petition or turn out at the sea base to protest this sale.

Can you turn to a Cub Scout and say "I tried" or will you have to explain to them, when they have no camp, why YOU DID NOTHING!

  1. Sadder still is that many volunteers are afraid to put their name to petition for fear of retribution by the Council and/or its Committee Chairs.

  2. Reminds me of that famous quote, "All it takes for evil to flourish is good men to stand by and do nothing." We need people with a backbone and guts who have the courage to not follow the herd. I think they'd find that they are in the majority.

  3. This is my first look at this blog. Thank you to whomever put this together. My name is Brian Russell. I am a volunteer at the Long Beach Area Council. My son, nephew and niece are registered in scouing. I am past Scoutmaster of Troop 126, Wood Badge trained, have done a few things with Scouting and the LBAC and now am the District Chairman of the Los Fierros District and am a rather new member of the Executive Board (about 1 year into my term). I am also the guy who stood up to offer a substitute motion asking for 90 days to raise the $250,000.

    Now that you know who I am, let me responsd to Anonymous on June 1 at 7:15 when they wrote, "Sadder still that many volunteers are afraid...for fear of retribution by the Council or it's Committee Chairs." I am a District Committee Chair and I am that Council Board Member. There is nothing to fear from me. Speak to me honestly with verve and sincerity. You'll have my attention and respect. The worst that can happen is you get enlisted to be a part of the solution. So don't invent this fear thing. Geez, where not the "goon squad". We are caring adults and parents whom love the program but realize that we need to raise the necessary funds to sustain the council. Simple and clear. If we had leaders that used fear and retribution as their prime motivators, they are GONE! It's a brand new day at LBAC.

    Thank you to Kirt Manecke. I couldn't agree with you more.

    When you come by Scout o Rama tomorrow, look me up and say hello. We need your active participation to raise funds and awareness. Are you in yet?
